History

The history of Yosemite National Park is rich in diversity, conflict, and adventure. American Indians settled here after the Ice Age receded. Their descendants can be found in the area even today. When gold was discovered in California in 1849, it brought a lot of people to the region and also often caused violent conflicts.

The Mariposa Battalion (a Euro-American militia) was the first non-native group to enter Yosemite. Over the years, people came to know about the beauty and grandeur of the Yosemite Valley. Tourist operators began creating tours and lodging facilities and encouraged people to visit. It was in 1864 that Abraham Lincoln signed the Yosemite Grant, placing the park under the protection of the state of California.
